Behind the Scenes: Password Security!

The Science of Mentorship

The Living Security Big Idea video series is a training method designed to discuss one concept at three levels of difficulty: foundational, intermediate and advanced. But the secret sauce is mentorship.

Instead of creating video content which condescends or preaches, this series encourages and mentors users through common cybersecurity problems.

For example, in this video, security guru, Melissa Plicque, explores:

  • Password strength and it's application to fighting password-cracking attempts;
  • Passphrases and their help in making logins easy to remember and hard to forget;
  • People and how everyone is a gatekeeper for the organization.

Instead of condescending, Melissa asks questions to real people who have their own unique habits and hangups. She addresses each one personally and establishes credibility through empathy and feedback.

Behavioral Science

In behavioral science, people are more likely to listen when they feel heard. People are more likely to learn when they feel like it addresses them personally. And these are exactly the principles we use to create extraordinary content in a world of noise.

Instead of adding to decision fatigue, we encourage users to ask for help (franchise the risk), eliminate unimportant choices (decrease cognitive load) and practice the 'stop, think, act' method (stress management). As author John Tierney explains...

“Decision fatigue helps explain why ordinarily sensible people get angry at colleagues and families, splurge on clothes, buy junk food at the supermarket and can’t resist the dealer’s offer to rustproof their new car. No matter how rational and high-minded you try to be, you can’t make decision after decision without paying a biological price.”

It also explains why people set poor passwords, reuse them everywhere and share them with friends. It's time we tried mentorship to change the game!

Oh, and here's a snapshot of our footage behind the scenes with Melissa and Billiona earlier this year.
